First Baptist Church of Little Falls, Minnesota was organized on August 18th, 1892 through the efforts of Rev. J. Malcom Sawyer, who was in charge of a box car named “Evangel” which was sponsored by the American Baptist Publication Society of Philadelphia, PA. This boxcar in which the church first met was a remodeled railroad passenger coach which was parked on the east side of Little Falls, not far from where the present building now sits.
The charter membership consisted of twenty people who were not afraid of a little hardship. Records indicate that there were eleven baptisms that first fall of 1892 held in the Mississippi River, the latest occurring in November!
The first pastor, Rev. W.H. Davenport was paid $10.00 a week and after the chapel car left town the new church began to hold its meetings in the Knights of Labor Hall, the city hall and the Rhodes-Tanner hall.
In 1893 the original lot at the present location where the church has continued to this day, was purchased for $1, 300.00 and the first building was erected in 1895. The facility soon became inadequate and in 1930 plans were made to build a larger church on the same site. On April 15th 1951 ground was broken for the present structure which sits on the property. In 1963 an educational wing was added to the east side of the church and started to be utilized in 1964.
Down through the years the church has experienced many blessings and has been instrumental in having a tremendous influence on the community of Little Falls. During the years the church experienced growth in numbers and ministries. Many evangelistic efforts were initiated to reach the community of Little Falls and the surrounding communities. Missions were and are a vital part of the church’s ministry, sending and supporting many missionaries throughout the years. In 1974 The North Star Christian Academy a kindergarten-senior high educational institution was established and educated many young until its closing in 2006.
We are humbled of our past as we look back on God’s blessings down through the years and we look forward to what God is going to do for us today and in the future!
